USDT vs USDC: which stablecoin should your business accept?

USDT and USDC compared for merchants: liquidity, chains, decimals, trust and fees — and why you can simply accept both.

Last updated: October 12, 2026

USDT and USDC are both dollar-pegged stablecoins, and for accepting payments they are interchangeable — 50 of either is 50 dollars. The practical differences are liquidity and reach (USDT leads), and trust profile (USDC is known for being fully reserved and regulated). For most businesses the best answer is simply to accept both.

The similarities that matter most

Both are designed to hold a 1:1 peg to the US dollar, both are widely supported across wallets and exchanges, and both exist on the major networks a business is likely to accept. If your goal is to let a customer pay you a dollar amount in crypto, either one does the job.

The one technical gotcha: decimals

The same token can use different decimals on different chains. USDT and USDC are 18 decimals on BNB Smart Chain but 6 on Ethereum. If an integration assumes one everywhere, a payment can be off by a factor of a million or more. This is a detail a good gateway should handle for you — looking up the right decimals by chain and contract, never by symbol — so you never have to think about it.

Why “accept both” usually wins

Every customer you force to hold a specific token is a customer who might abandon the checkout. Since USDT and USDC are the same dollar value, offering both costs you nothing and removes a reason to drop off — the customer simply pays in whichever they already have.

Vorixpay supports both USDT and USDC, on BNB Smart Chain and Ethereum, and can let the customer choose which to pay with at checkout. Amounts are converted using each token’s own decimals per chain, so a payment is always for the right value. See the network comparison for the other half of the choice.

Frequently asked

Should I accept USDT or USDC?

For most businesses, accept both. USDT has the deepest liquidity and the widest reach among everyday crypto users; USDC is favoured by those who prioritise its regulated, fully-reserved profile. Both are dollar-pegged, so letting the customer pay in whichever they already hold removes friction without costing you anything.

Are USDT and USDC worth the same?

Both are designed to hold a 1:1 peg to the US dollar, so 50 USDT and 50 USDC are treated as the same value in practice. Tiny, temporary deviations can occur in the market, but for accepting payments they are interchangeable dollar stablecoins.

Do USDT and USDC have the same decimals?

Not always, and it matters for integration. On BNB Smart Chain, USDT and USDC use 18 decimals; on Ethereum they use 6. A good gateway handles this for you, scaling the amount by the right token’s decimals so a payment is never off by a factor of a trillion.
